1985 Space Coast Marathon---Fifteenth Annual at B.C.C., Melbourne, Fl.--December 1, 1985 Harms sheds also - ran tag in marathon by Barbara Caywood FLORIDA TODAY Craig Harms is no longer an also-ran in the Space Coast Marathon. On his fourth try, the University of North Florida business professor from Neptune Beach claimed the championship of the 15th annual event Sunday morning. He wasn't even breathing hard as he crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 52 minutes and 49 seconds. "I feel fantastic," said Harms, who placed second, third and fifth in previous appearances here. The women's winner, 24 year-old Christine Gibbons who arrived at her new home in Melbourne from New Jersey last Wednesday, placed 15th overall with a time of 3 hours, 19 minutes and 48 seconds. In the 5- Mile Run for Liberty, former Satellite Beach High School standout Bill Hibbard raced away from the field and posted a winning of 25 minutes, 56 seconds. Hibbard , 18, is now a freshman at Troy State in Alabama and was home for the Thanksgiving holidays. Top finishing woman was Dede Patterson, a radiation therapy technician at Holmes Regional Medical Center, who was the marathon winner last year. Patterson, 25 said she did not defend her marathon title this year because she is getting married in a month and has not been training for the longer distance. Basically, I'm taking a year off from the marathon and running in the Track Shack series in Orlando," she said. "I really miss not running it (the marathon) though. It's hard for me to just stand here." Marathon winner Harms put on a tremendous surge from the 21st through the 23rd miles to secure his victory. "I was in third place at the 20 -mile mark and there were two runners ahead of me," he said. "I got 'em both. I noticed those guys up in front of me just died and I thought, 'I can win this thing .' I really put on a surge for about three miles, running six, six, six (three six minute miles)." Harms said all three of his losing times were better than his 2:49:52 Sunday, but added, 'I was younger then." This was the 127th marathon Harms has finished and his seventh victory. Walt Bush of Melbourne led most of the race, but the 44-year-old grandfather came in third after experiencing knotting in his left calf at the 22-mile mark. "Last Sunday I was out goofing around on a bicycle with my grandson Justin and I fell off," he said. "I jammed the bicycle pedal into my calf. The leg didn't bother me until 22 miles. Then it started to knot up. " I feel great though. For a 44-year-old, it's not too bad." Second-place finisher Don Smith of St. Cloud, the other runner who was ahead of Harms earlier, also experienced problems. "I started cramping up and I had to stop and walk at the 18th mile and again at the 21st," said the Kissimmee Osceola health teacher and assistant varsity basketball coach. "That's the first time I've ever stopped in any kind of race. It was a combination of the heat and the fact I had pushed myself pretty hard early. "I was hoping to make the Boston Marathon qualifying time of 2:50. I drank a lot of Gatorade at mile 22 and that picked me up. I came back and passed a couple of people who didn't die as soon as I did." Gibbons, 24, and her husband Wayne, a chiropractor, ran the entire race together. "We always run together," said Christine, who was competing in her 20th marathon. Explained Wayne: "We have a deal that we keep up with each other. But today Chris was anxious. She kept trying to stay five feet out in front of me and I was hurting like a dog." Chris said she really felt the change from 30-degree weather in New Jersey to the muggy 70 degrees here Sunday morning. "It seemed very hot to me out there," she said. Fifty-five runners started the 26-mile, 385 -yard race and 43 finished including a pair of teenagers running their first-ever marathon. Scott Baker, a Titusville High sophomore, and Lisa Palmisano, a Melbourne High senior, finished 30th and 31st in their first try at the marathon distance. "I always wanted to run one," said Palmisano, who previously had not run longer than 13 miles. "It hurt, but I enjoyed it. My goals were to finish and not stop during the run." Palmisano, who was the second female finisher, sprinted across the line. "This is by far the roughest race there is," said Baker, who decided two days ago to give the marathon a try. "It' just something I always wanted to do." The oldest runner was 64-year old Millard Shumate of Tampa who crossed the finish line in 22nd place. "This was my 29th marathon," he said. "and I'm not going to run another one for two weeks." 01. Craig Harms 2:52:49 1st male overall 02. Don Smith 3:00:17 1st male 30-34 03. Walt Bush 3:02:34 1st male 40-44 04.
