Ancient Oaks 100 Titusville FL Dec. 8-9 2001 Monica Scholz, 34, CAN 22:23 (course record M/F) Don Jans, 69 31:38 (1st male) Stu Gleman, 58 31:39 8 starters Monica Scholz of Ontario extended her own record for the most 100 mile races completed in a year with 22. She plans to run one more race next week in San Diego to wrap up her season with 23. This breaks the record of 20 set last year by Hans Dieter Weisshaar of Germany. This was also Monica's eighth win as first female and her third consecutive win overall for both men and women. (see http://www.run100s.com/monica.txt ). Today she broke the course record for both men and women of 22:46 set by Mike Dobies last year. She was 9 hours ahead of her nearest competitor. Don Jans was the oldest runner at age 69, and also the first male finisher with 31:38. He ran the last several miles with walking sticks and fell several times. He was followed one minute later by race director Stu Gleman. The race consists of 37 laps of a 2.75 mile trail loop through a lush forest, flat to gently rolling with some roots but no rocks. The course is not lit at night, so runners must use flashlights. There are 4.5 miles of 10 inch wide planks over the muddy sections. The weather was 65 to 80 F with 80-100% humidity, mostly sunny with rain showers at night. The race was advertised as "no fee, no aid, no awards, no wimps", although Stu provided an excellent variety of food, better than most races that charge $100-200 entry fees. 5 of 8 runners did not finish within the 32 hour time limit, which was from 7:00 AM Saturday to 3:00 PM Sunday.
